Emergency Financial Assistance, Food Assistance
Mr. Duncan, a 65 year old Marine Corps Veteran with a wife and child found himself in a tough situation concerning housing. He reached out to Veterans Services of the Carolinas for assistance.
The Challenge:
The Duncan family had been through a series of challenges, after moving for what seemed to be a promising job and this falling through, they ended up residing in a hotel. Persevering, Mr. Duncan found new employment and the family was able to settle into a home. Unfortunately, sometime after due to sudden health issues, that employment was lost and rent fell behind.. The family now faced unemployment and potential eviction.
NCServes Solution:
After Mr. Duncan made a call to the Coordination Center, we were able to get an understanding of the situation and discuss the needs at hand and a course of action moving forward. The immediate need established was financial assistance.
Service: Emergency Financial Assistance
Service Partner: Semper Fi & America’s Fund
NCServes promptly filled out multiple financial assistance applications on behalf of the Veteran, as well as sent application and contact information to the Veteran to utilize. Along with this- referrals were made for Job Search/Placement, to connect the Veteran with his local VSO (Veteran Service Officer) for VA claims assistance, and local food and clothing resources were sent to alleviate the stress of these challenging times.
Results:
Financial assistance was provided by the Semper Fi Fund, covering the total of the rent needed, allowing the Veteran and his family to avoid eviction and giving the stability and time needed to get back on their feet. With the food and clothing resources being local and available to utilize whenever needed, and the employment referral accepted, the family could move forward.
Career and Community:
Mr. Duncan’s family was able to secure all immediate needs and set themselves up for success in the future. After calling into NCServes, rent and food was no longer a concern, and a long term solution of securing active and passive income was set in motion to hopefully prevent this challenge from ever occurring again.
Conclusion:
Mr. Duncan’s story is one of perseverance and strength. When challenge after challenge presented themselves, he and his family continued on and thankfully utilized the community that is here for Veterans and Civilians alike. Through the network of resources available he was able to ensure stability in their lives and move forward with a newfound trust that he is not alone.
