Background:

Paul, a 41 year old single father, bravely served his county. Unfortunately, his services were marred by trauma, leading to ongoing  PTSD. Once Paul returned home he faced an even more personal battle going through a divorce and raising their child alone as a single father. Paul was discharged from the Army with an honorable discharge.

The Challenge:

Paul found himself in a dire circumstance. Struggling with PTSD it was hard to work, as well as being a single father. He needed immediate assistance to ensure that they would not become homeless. and to address his mental health challenges.

NCServes Solution:

In his time of need, Paul reached out to NCServes (a coordinated network of public, private and non-profit organizations dedicated to helping veterans and their families.) NCServes provided a lifeline for Paul and his child.

Service: Mental Emergency financial assistance
Service Partner:
Semper Fi Foundation

NCServes quickly arranged for emergency housing and food assistance from ABCCM - a non-profit organization addressing poverty, hunger, homelessness and access to healthcare for the under-served in Buncombe County. This ensured Anna and her children had a safe and stable place to live. Alongside this, they provided food assistance to ensure the family had nutritious meals. These immediate interventions were crucial in stabilizing their living conditions and alleviating the daily stressors of homelessness and hunger.

NCServes quickly helped the veteran put in for assistance requests with Semper Fi to ensure a possible financial solution for the past due rent, to help ensure that Paul and his child had a safe place to live. Along with that assistance request NCServes also helped the veteran find food, and clothing for Paul and his child. To help stabilizing their living conditions and eliminating daily stresser of hunger and potential homelessness.

Results:

With the stability coordinated by NCServes and their partners, Paul and his child were able to get the assistance with past due rent to ensure that they were not going to be homeless as well as getting food resources. The veteran was able to secure safe housing and food.

Career and Community:

Paul's journey did not stop at securing basic needs. With the assistance and encouragement from NCServes, Paul is working with our HVRP program to land a job as well as working with the VSO to get a higher service-connected disability rating. Paul is currently working with NCSeres to connect the veteran with support with other veterans.
